What to Expect During an MRI If You Are Claustrophobic

Feeling nervous about an MRI is incredibly common, especially if you struggle with claustrophobia. At Hope Imaging we understand how overwhelming the idea of being inside an MRI machine can feel. Our team is trained to make the process as comfortable as possible. Knowing what to expect can ease anxiety and help you prepare with confidence.

Before your scan begins our technologist will walk you through every step. You will have the opportunity to ask questions, express concerns, and take your time settling in. We provide ear protection and often offer calming music to help you relax. You will be positioned on the MRI table with cushions or blankets to keep you comfortable.

The machine may feel close, but you will never be alone. Your technologist will stay in constant communication with you and you will have a call button in your hand that allows you to reach them at any time. The machine makes tapping and humming sounds, which are normal. Most scans take between fifteen and forty five minutes depending on the area being imaged.

Many patients find that focusing on breathing helps. Closing your eyes before entering the machine can also create a sense of open space. Some people imagine a favorite vacation spot or listen closely to the music to stay relaxed.

Our goal is to ensure that you feel supported throughout the entire process. With the right environment and a compassionate team, an MRI can be much more manageable than many expect.
